New Polestar 3 SUV teased

03rd December 2021

Polestar continues to beat its drum about its forthcoming debut SUV, bigging up the premium electric model’s American connection on the eve of Polestar’s expected $20 billion public listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York.

So here it is then: the unveiling of the new Polestar 3. Well, not quite. It’s a teaser image again and as teaser images go, it’s rather less informative than the first one they put out in July. Not many clues here about how this performance SUV “will define the look of SUVs in the electric age.”

Chances are though it will look pretty cool like the Polestar 2, with added design elements from the very cool Precept concept. It’s expected to be near Tesla Model X in size, have a strong focus on sporting luxury and in top trim come with all-wheel-drive and twin motors, with a range of over 300 miles. It’s thought it will be a strict five-seater; this platform with a three-row, seven-seat body is likely to form the next all-electric Volvo XC90.

At an event in New York for potential investors, Polestar chief Thomas Ingenlath said Polestar 3 was intended to be one of the most climate-responsible cars ever made, also one with advanced autonomous driving abilities.

To be made in a Volvo plant in South Carolina, the Polestar 3 aims to take the brand to 29,000 annual sales, still small beer by premium SUV standards but around three times what the China-made Polestar 2 sedan sold in 2020.

As the latest pic of a camo-ed car indicates, the first Polestar SUV is not quite ready for the showrooms. We’ll undoubtedly see it in the flesh in 2022 but some reports say sales might not start until early 2023. The Polestar 3 is likely to be followed by a sportier, more coupe-styled SUV, Polestar 4, and then by “Polestar’s Porsche Panamera”, the flagship Polestar 5 based on the sexy looking Precept concept.

With a new car due every year for the next three years, Polestar aims to turn 29,000 annual sales into 290,000 by 2025. “From here on in, Polestar is all about growth,” says Ingenlath.

That’s the product plan, and it looks good to us – just a small question of going public first to raise the dosh to pay for them all…
