New Triumph Speed Triple RS revealed

At the heart of the new model is an entirely new 1,160cc triple, accordingly developed with insight from the British manufacturer’s Moto2 race engine programme and with every single component optimised for increased performance and reduced mass – it’s 7kg lighter than the outgoing unit and more compact too.

As a result, the engine is more responsive and 650rpm higher revving, with peak torque of 125Nm (92.5lb ft) arriving at 9,000rpm and power of 180PS (132kW) coming slightly later at 10,750rpm. Engine inertia is 12 per cent lower, while a new free-breathing intake and exhaust promise a raspier sound.

Cradling the engine is an all-new, mass-centralised chassis, which is both narrower and lighter than the previous model (the whole package is 10kg lighter at 198kg wet). Designed to be more agile, precise and dynamic, it features high spec equipment including fully-adjustable, performance tuned Öhlins suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes and Metzeler RACETEC RR tyres. Triumph claims the result will be ‘the ultimate performance naked sports ride’. Featuring in the RS’ performance-focussed package are five riding modes, including enhanced Track mode, plus a Triumph Shift Assist quickshifter, optimised cornering ABS and switchable cornering traction control (with IMU). The brace of new tech also includes a five-inch TFT dash, a distinctive full-LED lighting, keyless ignition and My Triumph Connectivity System as standard.

The design remains unmistakeable Triumph, albeit with sharper lines and a more muscular poise. This Speed Triple has its cat-like eyes fixed firmly on the top spot in the Super Naked market. And while it may be a step up from its predecessor in terms of price, at £15,100, it’s firmly in the middle of the market, and certainly worth that for the new engine and bolstered tech.

Expected to be available in dealerships from March, the Speed Triple RS will benefit from a high 10,000-mile service interval, and a two year unlimited mileage warranty – and no doubt Triumph’s extensive selection of aftermarket parts.
