The Japan Mobility Show (fka Tokyo Motor Show) is coming up, which as always means we’re seeing the reveals of several weird and wonderful concept cars. We're going to do our best to decipher their purpose, or indeed what they might be foreshadowing. The first of which is the Nissan Hyper Urban Concept, which even with it’s name, is already cracking on with the buzz words.

It’s due to be the first of a series of all-electric concept cars coming from the Nissan that will be displayed at the show, with further announcements coming on 10th, 17th and 19th October. So what is it? Well, it's most likely a glimpse at what the Qashqai will look like in 2035. Angular and futuristic it may be, with so-called ‘chromatic expressions’ changing as you walk around it, but there’s no hiding the family-friendly silhouette of one of the OG crossovers.

Obviously, it’s all-electric and features vehicle-2-home and vehicle-2-grid tech, meaning it can send power back into your house and support the power grid when it's parked up on the drive. Beyond that, there’s not too much talk about the powertrain.

Those mad rising doors are classic concept fodder so don’t expect to see them on the next Qashqai, though they do give a fab view into the cabin. The inside continues the futuristic feel. Inspired by kaleidoscopic triangles, there are plenty of angles, snazzy mood lighting and architecture with an emphasis on autonomous capability – look at how the front seats can collapse into the back seats to create what Nissan calls a ‘sofa-like private relaxing space’. The marque even reckons you could park it in your house so it becomes ‘an interior space to unwind’.

The instrument panel and display can be customised depending on mood but, more interestingly, Nissan has emphasised a bit of modularity to the Hyper Urban too. Keeping it up to date for longer is the ability to swap out hardware, as well as update software. If you want a new screen that’s more crisp and more powerful down the line, that’s possible.

Come press day for the Japan Mobility Show on 25th October this Hyper Urban Concept will be one among four new Nissan prototypes being shown off. We wonder what else it's got in store for us.
