Petrol-powered Mini JCW prices and specs revealed

It’s a sign of changing times that Mini revealed details of its new electric John Cooper Works E hot hatch – now the fastest model in the hatchback range – last month, with details of the petrol car only being revealed today. Fittingly, the petrol version runs on an old platform but gets the new EV’s styling tweaks and OLED infotainment screen.

All of which means you can guess what’s coming next. Like every fast Mini (bar the supercharged R53), the new JCW is turbocharged, using the same 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbo four-cylinder as the outgoing model.

In the hatchback, that’s good for 231PS (170kW), 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and a 155mph top speed. For reasons not explained, however, the Convertible makes do with 228PS (168kW), gets from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and tops out at 152mph. Both models come with a twin-clutch automatic and return around 40mpg.

Mini is tight-lipped regarding chassis development, only saying that the car has “enhanced suspension to increase handling ability.” Let’s hope it has a lot more character than the rather inert-feeling old model.

What isn’t in doubt is that you’ll be able to personalise your new Mini to within an inch of its life, covering everything from paint colours and stripes, to wheel sizes and mirror caps.

The centrally mounted exhaust is the easiest way to spot the petrol JCW, but it also has unique 17-inch black alloy wheels, JCW-branded brake callipers and a rear spoiler. Chili Red paint comes standard with six more colours on the option list. JCW Convertible models are also available in Cooper Grey.

While it will take a trained eye to spot a new Mini JCW from the outside, your life will be much easier on the inside, thanks to the new car’s frameless OLED display. The JCW has power, torque and G meters, plus a sports steering wheel, racy metal pedals and sports seats with leather-look bolsters and chequered-flag back panels.

Naturally, you can unleash an avalanche of personalisation options covering everything from extra kit to trim finishes and upholstery colours. As standard, the JCW has a head-up display, wireless charging, auto-dipping headlights, heated front seats, the Exterior Mirror Package, and a Harmon Kardon stereo.

Both versions of the JCW are available to order now, with the hatchback starting at £31,200 or £35,200 for the convertible.
