Skoda is hoping Britons’ love affair with its cars is going to be charged up when the brand’s first all-electric model, the Enyaq iV, is revealed in Prague on 1 September, ahead of sales beginning next year.

The teaser picture shows the profile of a high-riding crossover style of five-door with strong shoulders and an elongated,  arching roofline back to an upright rear tailgate. Skoda says the design, which is based on that of last year’s Vision iV concept, will offer plenty of style along with family-car practicality, including a 585-litre boot. It’s shorter than the Octavia but as spacious as the Kodiaq SUV, says Skoda.

Enyaq is a made-up word that uses Skoda’s signature q with the Irish name Enya which means source of life. iV is the brand’s identifier for its electrified models, of which it plans to have 10 within the next two years. The first, the Octavia iV plug-in hybrid, has just gone on sale.

The latest electric car is Skoda’s version of the wider VW Group’s first model to use the new all-electric MEB platform, the Volkswagen ID.3, UK orders for which open this week. In top-range 1st Edition spec, the ID3 costs £38,880 (excluding government grant, and with cheaper  versions coming later).

There is no price indication yet for the Enyaq iV but, like the VW ID.3, it will use the modular MEB electric car “toolkit” to the full for a wide range of models. You will be able to get an Enyaq iV with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and have a choice between three battery sizes and five power levels. The top version promises a range of 310 miles.
