As the line between cars and electronics blurs, the Consumer Electronics Show is becoming one of the most important venues for new car reveals. The 2022 running is no different, as tech and media giant Sony debuts its second car, the Sony Vision S 02 and clarifies its production intentions.
The Vision S 02 borrows a lot of the styling language debuted on the original and adapts it for use on a crossover with pleasing results. It’s sporting and minimalist but unlike Tesla, it does without sacrificing certain styling comforts like vents and grilles. This seven-seat pure electric SUV sits in the footprint of the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach E.
Riding on the same platform as the previous saloon concept means it uses a pair of 200kW motors, one per axle, providing all-wheel-drive and around 540PS (397kW). The original Vision S has in fact been undergoing testing in the two years since its debut, so presumably, any advancements or developments made feature on the Vision S 02.
Performance specs aren’t stated, though the original Vision S saloon was claimed to be good for 62mph in less than five seconds. Details on range and battery specs are as yet unannounced. On the inside much of the Vision S saloon’s design language carries over with full-width screens across the dashboard.
While it’s not clear whether Sony’s automotive collaborator, Magna Steyr, was involved with 02 like it was the original, what is clear is Sony’s increasing interest in the automotive sector. Sony Mobility Inc is being established as a separate company by the Tech Giant in the Spring of 2022 and will be used to “explore entry into the EV market”. At the debut of the previous Vision S two years ago at CES 2020, Sony claimed the project was a testbed for sensor and 5G tech.
For now, Sony publicly leads the charge for tech giants to join the automotive sector, ahead of the heavily rumoured projects within Google and Apple. Would you buy a car made by a tech company?
