Coupe, convertible or estate? It might be a familiar choice to have to make in a BMW or Mercedes dealership but when the choice relates to the Aston Martin DB5 it is definitely something out of the ordinary. The offer is made all the more special because all three cars are offered in rare Vantage spec.
The good news is that you do not have to choose between them: you can have all three. In fact that’s the only way to get them. The trio – representing every body style of the DB5 ever built – is being offered for sale in an unprecedented single job lot. For a cool £4 million.
“In the 40 years I have been dealing in Aston Martin cars, I have never been more excited than to offer this fabulous collection,” says Nicholas Mee of Nicholas Mee & Co who is selling the cars.
Any DB5 Vantage is rare – only around 70 of the 1,000 or so cars made in period were the high-performance version with the larger 282PS (207kW) 4.0-litre engine, among other upgrades. But the Shooting Brake version is super-rare.
The idea for a DB5 estate was originally come up with by then Aston owner David Brown who wanted a car that could accommodate his gundogs. London coachbuilders Radford realised the estate body out of hand-beaten aluminium and so successful was the design, and popular the concept of a more practical Aston Martin, that 11 cars were made. Only one of them was to Vantage spec though and that is this 1966 California Sage over red leather example.
The Shooting Brake joins a Caribbean Pearl Blue convertible which with five Vantage examples made is not far behind in the rarity stakes. The Vantage coupe is relatively common in comparison – ask James Bond. The car in the collection is true to 007 form and finished in Silver Birch.
The three cars have been collected over 12 years and are offered as a collection for the first time, each car restored to what Nicholas Mee & Co says is as-new condition. You can check that out by seeing them in the flesh when they appear at the London Concours in the City of London over three days from 8th June.
“The DB5 is the most Iconic Aston Martin model ever produced,” Nicholas Mee says. “This collection of DB5 Vantages I feel sure will forever be recognised as the ultimate Vantage collection.”
