The MG Cyberster has gone on sale today as the company gears up for its centenary celebrations at this year's Festival of Speed. The electric sportscar will spearhead Gerry Judah's sculpture taking pride of place in front of Goodwood House.

Prices start from £54,995 for the Trophy model and rise to £59,995 for the dual-motor GT. Both come with a punchy seven-year/80,000-mile warranty.

Hotly anticipated since making its maiden run up the hill in 2023, there are two flavours of Cyberster to choose from – Trophy and GT.

The rear-wheel drive Trophy will likely be the purist's choice with 340PS (250kW) and 475Nm (350lb ft) of torque, pushing it from 0-62mph in five seconds.

By contrast, the GT version deals in pure performance. It's all-wheel drive with 503PS (375kW) and 725Nm (535lb ft) slinging it towards the horizon from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds – a full second quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera.

Both models feature a 77kWh battery for a range of 316 miles (Trophy) or 276 miles (GT). Thanks to 150kW charging speeds, you can charge the battery from 10-80 per cent in less than 40 minutes. Driving modes include Comfort, Custom, Sport, and Track, allowing drivers to ‘explore the full potential of the Cyberster from refined, long-distance touring through to pure, performance-focused options.’

If you expect the Cyberster to be a modern interpretation of a lightweight MG sportscar, though, you'll be disappointed – the heavy battery weighs more than 1,900kg. Pardon the pun; it's a sportscar that leans heavily towards the GT end of the spectrum.

That being said, MG has spent 18 months tuning the Cyberster for UK roads. It gets Brembo calipers with three-stage brake recuperation and wheels up to 20 inches in size shod in Pirelli P Zero rubber.

The two-seater has "leather-style" seats, a sports steering wheel, metal pedals, and a 249-litre boot. Infotainment comes in the form of three screens – a 10.25-inch digital instrument binnacle flanked by two seven-inch displays – with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard kit includes an electric roof that drops in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph and you get equipment like climate control, a Bose stereo, 360-degree parking camera, six-way adjustable heated seats with lumbar support and an electrically adjustable and heated steering wheel. It’s also equipped with a full suite of autonomous driver aids.

Five colour options include New English White and Inca Yellow, and overall, there are 32 combinations available in the roof fabric.
