Joining the now sprawling list of track-only hypercars is the new De Tomaso P900. Based on the P72 road-going retro-styled supercar, the P900 gets a 900PS V12 along with a dusting of aero frippery.
The P900 is an orgy of fantastical numbers. That bespoke V12 – unrelated to the Ferrari-derived unit the P72 debuted with – revs to a massive 12,300rpm. It comes as a product of De Tomaso’s strategic relationship with German engineering outfit Capricorn, who will be handling the design and development of the marque’s cars. Displacing 6.2 litres, it puts its power to the rear wheels via an Xtrac sequential transmission. The whole powertrain package weighs just 220kg, while the car itself weighs just 900kg dry. There aren’t any downforce figures yet but the new aero gear – including a DRS-capable rear wing and a shaped floor – is said to have been honed in an F1-spec wind tunnel.
Just 18 P900s are set to be made, with deliveries possible as early as next Summer, though there is a bit of a catch. If you are one of the lucky few that’s put your name down and you want it next summer, it’ll come with a Judd V10, not the bespoke V12. The new engine won’t be ready for installation for another year and a half.
In better news, the road-going P72, which has been in development since its reveal and debut at 2019’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, is almost finished, with deliveries expected as early as next Spring. So, ignoring the reality that buyers of these sorts of cars tend to have one or more of each, which would you have? A P900, a GMA T.50S Niki Lauda, or an Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro?
