Genesis is coming to the UK and wowee, do they know exactly what we love to see… but perhaps not necessarily buy. Meet the G70 Shooting Brake, a swept-back wagon version of the marque’s G70 saloon, that’s exclusively available to the European market.
It’s a grand and risky entrance to the market, after operating as a brand all of its own aside from Hyundai in America for just over five years. It seeks to do what Infiniti definitively could not, as a breakout premium brand on this side of the Atlantic.
Genesis has been getting a lot of love lately for the design of its cars, which it says follow a design philosophy of ‘Athletic Elegance’. There’s a freshness and a modernness that’s also well-proportioned and unfussy. The same can be said of this G70 Shooting Brake.
“We are delighted to reveal this bespoke product - tailored for our European customers - so soon after revealing news of our arrival into the region,” said Dominique Boesch, Managing Director of Genesis Motor Europe.
“The G70 Shooting Brake marries luxury and European automotive heritage with our design philosophy of Athletic Elegance. Our fifth car in Europe, the Shooting Brake will stand apart through its unique design; it is a clear statement of our commitment to the region.
On the inside, too, the G70 and indeed many other Genesis models have a very handsome interior, with a sleek design and nice-looking well-made materials. Underneath, the G70 will be familiar to anyone that’s driven a Kia Stinger GT. The G70 shares that platform and many of its engines, including the top-end 365PS (268kW) 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6. To match that, the top-end version will also get Brembo brakes, an E-LSD and adaptive dampers.
Will it be a sales success? Historically cars in this segment come about through vocalised demands that rarely have followed through into enormous sales. Just look at the one-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake. There is precedent for it in other line-ups currently, though, with cars like the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake. We love to see it and we hope people buy it but we suspect the GV70 and GV80 SUVs it will be sold alongside will have the lion’s share of sales figures. We’d be delighted to be proven wrong.
Genesis cars, including this G70 Shooting Brake, will be available in the UK later in the year, with order books opening in the summer.
