Lamborghini has updated the Urus range for 2023, first with the more hardcore Performante and now again, with the softer Urus S. Think of it as the Performante ‘Touring’, with the full 666PS (490kW) whack but in softer more daily-able chassis.
The original, which launched five years ago, has been a sales boon for the Italian supercar marque, so broadening its breadth of appeal is a no-brainer. This Urus S is effectively the replacement of the pre-facelift model. Happily, Performante power means the performance is boosted, with a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds, on the way to a 190mph top speed.
There are some design elements from the Performante that carry over too, with the new nose and rump making the jump. The ‘vented’ bonnet is also new, joining an update that brings the Urus closer in line with Lamborghini’s evolving design language, set to be fully defined by the Aventador successor due next year.
A big part of this series of updates to the Urus is the increasing catalogue of personalisation options to “give Lamborghini clients the chance to make the Urus S truly theirs”. Among them are two themes for the two-tone leather on the inside, going well beyond the usual muted greys, blacks, browns and tans you’d expect from German competition.
The Lamborghini Urus S will effectively serve as the ‘entry-level’ car, relatively speaking, given its start point falls south of the £200,000+ Performante by around £20,000. Before options, you can get into one of these for £188,000. The question really, is whether it’s still top dog among super SUVs and whether it can carry that initial sales momentum, now the Aston Martin DBX707 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT are here, with the Ferrari Purosangue and BMW XM looming on the horizon.
