The new, more powerful Mercedes-AMG GT

Mercedes-AMG has quietly dropped the S from its GT sports car line-up. The good news though is that the entry-level model gets an additional 55PS, plus other enhancements including AMG Ride Control adaptive damping, to make it an S in all but name.

With versions of the GT bearing S, C, R, R Pro and, most recently Black Edition badges, nomenclature for the AMG sports car was getting confusing. Now badged plain old AMG GT, the entry model of the range can call on 530PS (523bhp) from its twin turbo 4.0-litre V8.

There’s no new performance data but the outgoing GT with 476PS could do 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds and hit 189mph flat out, figures the new model will be out to better.

At 530PS, the base GT maintains a healthy distance to the next-up GT R Pro at 585PS and, the ultimate AMG, the GT Black Edition with its stonking 730PS.

As well as the power boost and the Ride Control system, other high-performance features now included in this non-S version are an electronic locking rear differential, composite braking system and brake calipers painted in red. There’s also a lithium-ion starter battery and, like the outgoing S model, a Race mode among the drive settings.

Options include active rear steering with the Dynamic Plus package, and the Night package colour and trim upgrade featuring dark chrome highlights and carbon-fibre roof, or black soft-top on the roadster.

UK pricing is yet to be confirmed (the old model was £98,970) and first deliveries are promised for November, in either coupe or roadster forms, but prices in Europe are €119,079.80 (approximately £108,000) for the coupe and €130,679.80 (approximately £118,500) for the soft-top.
