The RWD Porsche Taycan is here
Porsche has unveiled a new rear-wheel-drive variant of its Taycan all-electric super saloon. It’s due to sit below the Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S in the lineup, as the fourth to be added to the range.
Of course, the big headline is that this is the first Taycan to put power to its rear wheels only. Porsche has celebrated that differentiating factor by, well, setting a world record, no less. Yes, the rear-wheel-drive Taycan now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest drift with an electric car, verified as having driven sideways non-stop for 42.171km.
The important numbers are of course range and performance. In terms of the former, there are two batteries available. As standard is a 79.2kWh (gross) and optional is the Performance Battery Plus which is 93.4kWh (gross). These are good for a WLTP-verified range of 268 miles and 301 miles respectively. Both can be charged from five to 80 per cent battery in as little as 22.5 minutes and to 100 per cent in 27.5 minutes.
What about performance? Well, you won’t be chasing down the Taycan Turbo S, that’s for sure. Standard power for the two battery sizes is a respective 326PS (240kW) and 380PS (280kW), increasing to 408PS (300kW) and 476PS (350kW) in overboost mode with launch control. Both are good for a 5.4-second 0-62mph time, before going on to a top speed of 143mph.
So how much is the new rear-wheel-drive Porsche Taycan? It’s due to start from £70,690 for a car with the standard battery and no options. If that still sounds a little pricey to you, consider this. That is very nearly half what the Taycan Turbo S starts at. We’re big fans of the Taycan at GRR and a more accessible price of entry for the most sideways Taycan yet gets a big thumbs up from us.
