The Taycan GTS could be the Porsche EV’s sweet spot

Is this the electric Porsche with it all? Could be. Thanks to a clever bit of mixing and matching, Porsche has magicked up what just might be the pick of the Taycan range: the new Sport Turismo GTS.

Yes, we know there is a range of Taycans already but until now there hasn’t been one with the more sporty estate body (that’s the Sport Turismo bit of the name) and there hasn’t been any Taycan with GTS letters after its name, what for many fans of the marque has long been a signifier of peak Porsche.

All-wheel drive and fitting into the range between 4S and the Turbo on power and price, the GTS delivers an overboost (short periods only)  max of 598PS (440kW). With launch control, it's enough to catapult this large and weighty five-door from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph. The battery is a 93.4 kWh whopper for a range of up to 312 miles.

In line with all other Porsche model lines, the GTS moniker can be had with any Taycan body style, not just the new Sport Turismo, but it strikes us that the two were made to go together – one reason perhaps they were unveiled together at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

The promise of the Sport Turismo GTS is optimum performance and practicality without going to the excess of the Turbo range-topper, which in any case is only available as saloon or more rufty-tufty Cross Turismo estate. The Sport Turismo shares the same five-door profile as the Cross but is minus the body cladding and raised ride height. Porsche maintains it is still just as practical for people and luggage, and better in accommodation than the saloon.

All GTS models get tweaks to the adaptive air suspension and (optional) rear steering for a more dynamic edge. Porsche also says it has tuned up the noise to make the GTS sound more vroom vroom.

GTS models arrive next spring and in Sport Turismo form will set you back £105,000. Or a bit more if you go for the latest Taycan option, a panoramic roof with nine liquid crystal segments that can be individually made opaque at the touch of a button if the sun is bothering you. Porsche says it’s a world first.
