Bonhams’ first “live” drive-through auction since November 2019 has thrown up some intriguing propositions, confirming suspicions there are some cracking bargains around right now. How about a two-year-old McLaren 570S Spyder with a presale estimate of £60,000, a third its price new. You’d better buy it before we do…
Or how about a Bentley Continental for the same £60k? Not just any old Conti but the ultimate Supersports version from 2010, complete with carbon-fibre racing seats, top-notch Naim audio and the back seat delate option, so plenty of room for your golf clubs. This car’s first owner? That would be golfing superstar Rory McIlroy.
Into rallying rather than golfing? How about a two-owner late-model Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II (£35–45,000)? As a 1995 model it has the 215PS motor, wide body, rear spoiler and Recaro seats, and is finished in a distinctive Lagos Blue.
For a quarter that price the bobble hat brigade could take home one of the limited-edition Series McRae Imprezas that Subaru, and ProDrive, made in 1996 to mark the late Scottish ace’s first World Rally Championship. The numbered edition, in Rally Blue mica paintwork, has 555 numberplates and comes with an estimate of £5–10,000.
In among a slew of Jaguars is a 1946 Jaguar Mark IV 2.5-litre saloon, said to be among the earliest survivors of the run of cars built after the Second World War that bridged the gap between earlier SS cars and the later Jaguars. The saloon is said to be highly original (pigskin seats!) and the estimate here is £50-60,000.
Other Jags include four Mark 2 saloons with 2.4-, 3.4- and 3.8-litre engines and estimates starting at £10,000. There are also three E-types, including a 1966 4.2 fixed-head (£70-80,000), a 1952 XK120 roadster (£80–90,000), and a 1981 XJ6 3.4 for £10-15,000 – it was previously owned by the Saudi Royal Family and has been driven just 25,000 miles from new.
Bonhams is promising lots more like this when the selling action gets under way on 20th September. The MPH auction – MPH is the Bonhams division that deals with more affordable and modern classics – is being held during a big Drive-In classic car weekend at Bicester Heritage. All the 115 lots will be available to view inside a hangar on the Friday and Saturday before the drive-through sale starts at 1pm on the Sunday.
