This restored Ferrari 330 GTC avoids all the clichés

If you played a word association game with Ferrari, you’d probably first gravitate towards describing a mid-engined two-seater with red paint. But the Maranello marque isn’t exclusively about low-slung supercars. Offsetting the archetype are front-engined V12-powered GT cars that bring a little more decorum, and the 330 series is about as elegant as the longer-legged strain of Ferraris gets.

The 330 roughly equates to displacement of each of the twelve cylinders, and in GTC form the car borrowed the short wheelbase and independent rear suspension with the 275. Refinement was key. When the cars were new they were considered the easiest Ferraris to drive to date.

With the Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport just around the corner, there’s an option to bid on one at the Bonhams|Cars sale. Chassis number 09537 was supplied new to its first owner in Rome, finished then with maroon paintwork and beige Connolly leather.

In 1970, it crossed the Atlantic to the United States, finding its next owner in North Carolina a year later. The car passed around various states with different owners until around 2003. By then, it had acquired air conditioning before returning to Italy. After a period in storage, 09537 came to the UK for the first time to be recommissioned to running order.

In 2013, it was subjected to a bare-metal restoration that would occupy almost three years and consume £150,000. The bare-metal, no-expense-spared rebuild saw the car refinished in its current Blu Sera paint and Grigio leather interior. Post restoration, the car received Ferrari Classiche certification to confirm that it still has the original chassis, engine, gearbox and body. The extensive history file also includes receipts for that thorough restoration and the Massini Report.

If you’re looking for a less obvious Ferrari – and one where the temptation of Rosso Corsa paintwork has been resisted – that would be at home on a concours lawn on a long-distance tour, Bonhams|Cars has estimated this 330 GTC Coupé at £400,000 to £500,000 at the Members’ Meeting sale.
