The Toyota GR Yaris is about to get more powerful in 2024
The Toyota GR Yaris is three years old, which can mean only one thing – a facelift is due imminently.
And rumour has it the planned updates will comprise more than just the Yaris' face. According to Japanese outlet 'Best Car', power will increase to 304PS (224kW), the same as the GR Corolla, which uses a re-tuned version of the same inline three-cylinder fitted to the current GR Yaris.
The addition of an eight-speed automatic gearbox is also rumoured, although the current six-speed manual will still be available. Paddle shifters will come as standard, and the automatic lower ratios and tall cruising gear should make it faster on B roads and quieter on monotonous motorway treks.
Toyota went to town on the GR Yaris when it was revealed in 2020. Initially conceived for rallying (although rule changes meant it never did compete), the GR Yaris got a bespoke body and chassis from the Prius, not the standard Yaris. A highly-tuned engine, adjustable four-wheel-drive system and – most importantly – keen pricing made it an instant sales success.
You can expect the new model to be priced from around £35,000.
