It seems weird to say that an engine from the modern era is an ‘all time great’, for many are stifled by regulations on emissions, sound and economy and in terms of character, can be pale imitations of their ancestors. As much is not the case for a few, though. The Ferrari V12, the Porsche Motorsport flat-six and, we’d like to argue, the Ford Mustang V8, or specifically, this Mustang V8. For the GT350 didn’t come with any old smoker. It came with the Voodoo, a fettled, flat-plain crank version of the ubiquitous Coyote, pushed out to 5.2 litres and with a rev limit of over 8,000rpm.
As a result, we can honestly say it’s up there as one of the best-sounding V8s of all time. So yes, naturally, today’s late-to-arrive video is an onboard with one as it chases a Porsche 911 GT3 around Sonoma.
Listen to this and tell us we’re wrong – that guttural rasp, the roar down low that tumbles into a feral shriek as the rotating assembly nears its limits. What’s your favourite-sounding V8 of all time?
