The anticipation hurts. It’s just one more sleep until your track day, which more or less equals one more sleep until Christmas. Except this is in many ways better than Christmas because McLaren are delivering a 620R to the Goodwood Motor Circuit at 08:00 sharp the following day with a van full of tyres.
No, this wasn’t a dream, this was our reality a few weeks ago. What was also a reality was a truly shocking weather forecast. Classic England, after weeks of sunshine, more sunshine was predicted for every day except the one where we’d be venturing out of the Goodwood pits. A soaking-wet circuit and a mid-engined, 200mph-plus supercar in the rain? Now the anticipation was mixed with anxiety.
How did we get on? Well thankfully there were no spins and no awkward phone calls to McLaren saying I’d stuffed one of their cars into a wall. Despite the tricky conditions it was a mega day, and the 620R, as you’ll see, an absolute monster. If only it had arrived in wrapping paper with a bow on top.
