When the first Porsche Motorsport-fettled variant of the 992-generation 911 is going around the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, you have to wonder what’s to come for the platform and just how fast they can make it go. Watch for yourself as Porsche maestro Lars Kern sets a hypercar-rivalling ‘Ring lap time in the new 911 GT3.
Yes, the new GT3 is lapping the Green Hell as fast, or potentially faster, than the famous record-breaking 6:57 lap taken by the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar in 2013. Yes, the near-1,000PS electrified, all-wheel-drive, carbon-tubbed flagship is now matched by a car which, realistically, anyone with the money can buy. This is however less a commentary on how comparatively slow the 918 is and more how comparatively fast the GT3 has become, seven-and-a-half years on. It bests its direct predecessor by a full 17 seconds. That said, with around 50 per cent more downforce and tyres resembling cut slicks, some might not be surprised.
