The thing about the Volkswagen Golf R, what makes it so appealing, is that it’s like the 911 Turbo of the hot hatch world. It’s a versatile, do-anything performance car, that’s as happy getting absolutely rinsed on the Nordschleife as it is bimbling up and down the North Circular on a chilly winter commute. Happily, the video we have for you today is very much the former.
We find ourselves in the point of view of the driver as he basically puts the thing on its sidewalls. The thing is, it’s a Golf R. So even at the Nürburgring, even when it’s getting its head kicked in, it takes it all in its stride. The speeds it takes some of the turns are simply mind-boggling, as we see the driver scrabble for bite in the fronts. We’re rather fond of that new high-performance R display, too. What we’re not so sure of, is the sound. Is there a bit of synthesised six-cylinder in there? Very off-putting. What a great car all the same.
