Is this the peak of the Subaru Impreza? Surely there’s no argument, the Impreza P1 is a true icon. Introduced right at the height of Subaru’s WRC pomp, this car captured the imagination of enthusiasts who were very taken by the idea of driving Colin McRae’s championship winning car on the road.
Packing that wonderful 2.0-litre turbocharged boxer engine that produces such a deep burble reminiscent of the great rallying Imprezas, the P1 packs 280PS (206kW) at 6,500rpm for a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds. Even as this car now ticks over 20 years of age, it’s still a brilliantly sharp thing to drive, although some turbo lag is to be expected with that enormous turbo.
Just 1,000 of these were built, which makes the Subaru Impreza P1 an extremely rare beast. Picking up a good one is likely to be a challenge.
