The hot hatch as a genre has morphed multiple times over the years, as the breed came in and out of general favour with buyers. As the young of the early 2000s found themselves with a bit of spare cash to splash, so too did fiery versions of small cheap cars come to meet them at dealers. This was something of a renaissance for the breed, so we’ve gone through the selection from the era and picked our favourites.
From the 8,000rpm-revving Honda Civic Type R, to the rabid turbocharged diff-equipped first-generation Ford Focus RS, to the driver’s darling that was the Renault Clio 182 Trophy, these are we think the cream of the crop.
