Homologation specials are the coolest cars on the road, aren’t they? They really have no business being there. They’re impractical and pay almost zero mind to the minutiae of road use, compared to flat-out racing.
Take the 911 GT1, perhaps the quintessential homologation special. From the cab backwards, it was a 962, with its water-cooled turbocharged flat-six sitting in the middle. A 911 in badge alone, then. Then there’s the Peugeot 206 T16. Yes, it’s sort of the same same as a 205. Yes, it sort of has the same face. But what other 205 puts its engine in the middle, or is all-wheel-drive? What other 205 requires half of its body to lift off for access to the engine? Not exactly a nan-spec run-around for dawdling to the shops. God, we love homologation specials. Which is your favourite?
