Watch any video, read any story or start any conversation about the new Toyota Supra, the BMW Z4 will almost certainly be mentioned. It must be frustrating, really for both Toyota and BMW, but flack was inevitable.
When Toyota launched the GT86 and Subaru the BRZ, even though both cars were near-as-makes-no difference identical, as car enthusiasts we didn’t really care – we were getting two new sportscars when neither might have been built were it not for the partnership. With the new Toyota Supra, though, things are a little different, not just because the Supra’s common DNA has, to a certain extent, been deliberately hidden away, but because the Supra name is a holy one – not every Toyota Supra was a good one, but the name still carries an awful lot of weight.
Putting all that to one side, is it time to be happy that the Supra exists? And in fact, is it a better car than what came before?
