Some love the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf GTI, some do not. I am one of those who was never particularly impressed with the seventh GTI. Volkswagen did make it excellent with the TCR toward the end of its life, but that was quite an expensive piece of kit. Now though, there is a new standard Golf GTI, and it promises to be a bit more sporting.
The new Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTI is stiffer, it has a faster steering rack and does come with a manual gearbox. We’ve reviewed it – while we wait to try the faster, supposedly more driver-focussed, Clubsport – albeit with a DSG gearbox, and while all of VW’s effort seems to be going into the ID.3, what we found about the Mk8 GTI might surprise you.
Oh, and yes, this is a road-based review – you might guess by watching why we weren’t really able to give it a proper track test…
