Have you ever seen a lifted NA Mazda MX-5? How about a lifted, supercharged E30 BMW 316i whipping up a muddy hill, engine bouncing off the rev limiter? Or perhaps a Volkswagen Beetle tackling off-road tracks most Range Rover drivers would steer clear of? If not, this is the video for you. Welcome to the ridiculousness of the 2019 Torbay Trial.
Honestly, we’re slightly lost for words. There are some odd motorsports in this world, and there are of course many mud-munching hillclimbs, but we’ve never seen a hillclimb where so many of the competitors are committed to adding an extra foot of suspension travel to their cars. There are 3 Series BMWs, Z4s, MX-5s, Smart FourTwos, Beetles, Golfs, Peugeot 205s, and some other funky looking vehicles we’re struggling to identify (kit car lovers, you may have more success). Is this much mud recommended for an MX-5 chassis? No, definitely not. But we can’t help but stand up and applaud every single one of these owners and drivers for being so utterly committed.
