Volkswagen has revealed camouflaged pictures of its ID.7 Tourer that flies in the face of the current industry thinking that we've lost our love for estate cars and should be buying less-efficient, bulkier-to-drive SUVs.
Unsurprisingly, 'efficiency' is one of the main reasons VW decided to create the ID.7 Tourer; with a 0.24Cd rating, the electric estate is usefully more aerodynamic than a comparable electric SUV like the company's ID.4, which has a 0.28Cd score.
Better still, with a 545-litre boot, the ID.7 Tourer steals a march on the 543-litre boot you'll find in the ID.4, and the electric estate's luggage capacity swells to 1,714 litres with the rear seats folded. This capaciousness is, we're told, down to Volkswagen's MEB EV platform which allows for shorter overhangs and a longer wheelbase.
Expect the Touring to be mechanically (or electronically?) identical to the ID.7 saloon. It has a battery capacity of up to 83kWh, allowing for a range of more than 430 miles and 200kW charging speeds for 10-80 per cent charges in minutes.
Expect the standard car to sport VW's new-generation electric motor mounted at the rear and producing 286PS (210kW) for 0-62mph in around six seconds. A GTX model, with front and rear motors producing 406PS (299kW) combined, will likely get from 0-62mph in fewer than five seconds.
The ID.7 saloon is expected on sale anytime now, while the Touring will likely be in showrooms sometime next year.
