VW ID. Xtreme is an ID.4 for the wild

Now here’s a bit of fun. Imagine a Volkswagen ID. 4 prepared for extreme off-roading, with a bump in power, some serious rubber and more. Now, look at this, the Volkswagen ID. Xtreme. Save for the ID. R, this is Volkswagen’s most powerful ID. car yet.

Firstly, that power figure. The ID. Xtreme gets a bump to 387PS (285kW) thanks to a high performance drive at the rear axle and software adaptations. That’s around a 30 per cent jump on what the ID.4 GTX has – not pant-wetting but a significant number nonetheless. There’s a raised rally running gear, 18-inch wheels, 50mm wider 3D-printed rubber wings and what looks like a bull bar up front. There’s an aggressive LED light bar up top too. What’s slightly odd is that the ID. Xtreme gets its own custom soundtrack, with a generator in the wheel housing.

On the inside, the ID.4 has been raced up, with new seats, Alcantara trimmings and orange accenting. The car was developed from a retired 82kWh development vehicle.

“The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) has enormous technical potential,” says Silke Bagschik, Head of the MEB Product Line.

“For many of our customers, vehicles are much more than just a means of transport. With the ID. XTREME, we are raising electric mobility from VW to a new performance level.”

Could we see something like this hit production? It’s unlikely for now, though a lot of the MEB platform’s appeal is its versatility and cheapness to implement. The possibilities are there, if the big wigs do decree it. The car can be seen in person at the ID.Treffen event in Locarno, Switzerland, which is by and for fans of electric mobility. Think of it as a Worthersee for VW EV fans.
