Wacky 1916 Harley-Davidson Model J Package Truck to go to auction

Harley-Davidson motorcycles aren’t known for their utility. Rather, the all-American manufacturer’s models are famed for their cruising style and thumping V-twins.

So, this early example, due to be sold at the upcoming Bonhams’ Stafford Sale is a diversion from the norm, with its ‘package truck’ sidecar, designed to, surprise, surprise, haul packages across America.

Known as the Model J Package truck, this is effectively a cargo container mounted on a sidecar chassis, which in turn is attached to a Harley-Davidson Model J, an evolution of Harley’s original V-twin powered motorcycle. It was the second commercial model offered by H-D, following the trike-like Motorcycle Trucks as used by the Milwaukee U.S. Postal Service in the early 1910s.

Such set-ups made commercial sense, not only for their ability to cut through traffic and conquer the roughest of roads, but also for the advertising space offered on the side of the container – Harley-Davidson even offered a sign-writing service to buyers.

The Package Truck was such a success that it would remain in production for 42 years until replaced by yet another Harley commercial vehicle, the Servi-Car.

Dating from 1916, this example was sold new with the Package Truck option, plus the optional three-speed gearbox and electric lighting system first offered on the 1915 models. It also, rather unusually retains its original Remy magdyno and its 'hand-blown' headlamp bulb. According to the seller, only one other example retains this original electrical system. Also original are a Corbin speedometer and embossed Harley-Davidson leather luggage set.

Finished in a gorgeous powder blue, the model underwent a complete nut and bolt restoration during 2015 and 2016, during which all the nickel brightwork was re-plated, the panelling repainted, and the engine and gearbox overhauled.

After spending its recent history as a display bike, only minimal recommissioning is required to get it back on the road. With an estimate of £25,000 - 35,000 when it goes to auction on April 25th – 26th, the lot also includes a restored Harley-Davidson sports sidecar, which was attached to the original chassis in the early 1920s, a dating certificate and V5C document.
