It was, after all, at Goodwood where it really all began for the legendary Italian rider with his first winner on Lizzy Hare as a 16-year-old apprentice in 1987 for Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani, and he soon went on to become the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season.

Since then, he has become one of the most famous jockeys of all time, racking up dozens of Group 1 races around the world, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record six times, 14 Breeders’ Cup successes, four Dubai World Cup victories and the Epsom Derby twice.

He was British flat champion jockey three times in 1994, 1995 and 2004, and who can forget that afternoon at Ascot in September 1996 when he went through the card, riding all seven winners.

Riding at his final Qatar Goodwood Festival ahead of retirement, Frankie Dettori delighted the crowds with his signature flying dismount following success in the Group 2 World Pool Lennox Stakes, aboard Kinross. What a fabulous finale, for Frankie, who has given to many Goodwood racegoers so much pleasure over the years since that first win on British soil 36 years ago.
