Already have an accountGoodwood is the seat of the Dukes of Richmond, Lennox, Gordon & Aubigny, whose family art collection is one of the greatest in any English country house. The present Duke’s son and heir, the Earl of March & Kinrara, restored the rooms to their former glory, including a complete picture re-hang and rearrangement of all of the Goodwood Art and the superb English and French furniture.
The origins of the Goodwood Art Collection lie with the Royal house of Stuart. The 1st Duke of Richmond & Lennox (1672-1723) was the natural son of King Charles II and his French mistress, Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth.
Portraits of the Stuart Royal family were added to the collection by the 2nd Duke of Richmond (1701-1750 ) and it was further augmented by his Grand Tour purchases, culminating in the first commissions of London given to Canaletto.
The 2nd Duke (1701-1750) was also very involved in the new Palladian movement, building the banqueting pavilion, Carnè's Seat and the Shell House, and commissioning fireplaces and furniture by William Kent, originally for Richmond House in London but now part of the Goodwood Collection. The 2nd Duke inherited many superb works of art from his grandmother, Louise de Keroualle, as well as the French title, Duke of Augbigny, thereby becoming Duke of Richmond, Lennox & Aubigny.
The 3rd Duke of Richmond (1735-1806) not only added another group of superb portraits to the Goodwood Art Collection, but also - from his time as Ambassador to Paris - Gobelins tapestries and furniture by some of the greatest French eighteenth-century cabinet-makers. He commissioned a spectacular Sèvres dinner service, now beautifully displayed in the circular Card Room, while his racehorses and hunters were painted by George Stubbs. The 3rd Duke was the builder of the great Regency state apartments, including the magnificent Egyptian dining-room. Designed for entertaining on a lavish scale, these rooms are still used to this day for parties and events.
We welcome visitors to the house with a wide range of historical, artistic, and domestic interests, be it in Kings and Queens, Scottish history, marine paintings, women's lives, the Regency style, the Edwardian period, sporting art, landscape, the history of horse-racing and the history of cricket.
Goodwood is a great place to admire French furniture. In 1765 the 3rd Duke of Richmond was posted to Paris, as Ambassador to the court of King Louis XV. While he was there he acquired items of furniture by the latest and greatest of the expert Parisian cabinet makers, making fine additions to his furniture collection.
A large suite of chairs upholstered in their original five colour Lyons cut silk velvet was made, probably in that year, by Delanois, a cabinet maker of great distinction. There are more chairs by Gourdin, commodes by Dubois and Latz, and a coiffeuse by Roger Vandercruse.
This magnificent giltwood armchair, one of a pair, was designed by William Kent for Richmond House in London. It bears putti heads on each side of the cresting, harmonising with the elaborate white statuary marble chimneypiece, also designed by Kent for Richmond House and now in the Music Room at Goodwood.
The Duke developed such a love of French furniture that he continued to collect after his return to England, gathering works in the late Louis XV, and Neo-Classical styles: there is a commode by Couturier, a secretaire by François Rübestück, and a very pretty little lady's writing desk by Feuerstein. There are also two important earlier pieces from the studio of Boulle, giving a good overall sense of the development of French furniture throughout the eighteenth century.
Lady's dressing table stamped RVLC JME, c. 1770. Roger Vandercruse (d.1799), called Lacroix, was received Master in 1755. The right-hand middle drawer inscribed in black ink '3 pièce Argentées Poirier', showing that three silver boxes were to be made as inserts, and that the item went through the hands of the famouse marchand mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier.
This magnificent commode is one of a pair designed by William Kent for Richmond House in London. They are attributed to William Hallett and date from c. 1735.
A charming French lady’s writing-desk with parquetry inlay, made by the French ébéniste Joseph Feuerstein (1733-1809). The Sèvres porcelain plaque was probably added in the nineteenth century.
Banners representing the different departments of France were awarded by Napoleon to his armies when they rallied before him on the Champ de Mars in Paris in May 1814. After his defeat, Louis XVIII gave most of them to the Duke of Wellington, who retained all except this one, which he gave to the 4th Duke and Duchess of Richmond as a memento of their stalwart behaviour in Brussels. It was originally in the French national colours of red, white and blue.

Louise was the favourite mistress of King Charles II from 1670 until his death in 1685; the 1st Duke of Richmond was their natural son.

Beyond, the Temples is seen in shadow. St Paul's Cathedral stands high above Wren's City churches, with the Monument round on the right. On the river itself can be seen barges of the City livery companies.

The Estate steward, probably Richard Buckner (d.1776/7), dressed in green livery with gold frogging, is pointing out the three horses hooded and blanketed for exercising. The jockeys wear frock coats, their yellow and scarlet ducal livery matching the horses' colours. To the right, a horse is being rubbed down with straw, surrounded by grooms who may include members of the Budd family from Charlton. The spire of Chichester Cathedral is in the background, with the Isle of Wight beyond.

Two of his favourite relatives are shown; he described his brother-in-law Henry Fox, the portly man at the centre, as ‘my second father’ and ‘my best friend’. George, 3rd Earl of Albemarle, shown with his back to the viewer, was his first cousin (and the oldest of his cousins). The black servant wearing yellow and scarlet livery, holding the Arab horse, may either be Thomas Robinson, who came to Goodwood in the 1740s and was named after the Governor of Barbados, or a footman named Jean Baptiste, who came from one of the French colonies. The gamekeepers wear the green Estate livery.

The Gobelins Tapestries show delightful scenes from the story of Don Quixote. Our guides enjoy explaining to visitors the story in each scene. The Goodwood tapestries are designed to look like paintings and form part of a set ordered by Louis XV for his private Château at Marly, where he went to escape the busy court life at Versailles. In the end, he only wanted 18 of the 30 ordered from the factory and so he gave some away to distinguished members of the court, including the Duke of Richmond.
The Goodwood tapestries have recently been cleaned, making the detail of costume and background even clearer. They charmingly convey the lightness, prettiness and humour of French 18th century art.
