The Goodwood Health Summit Returns to Tackle the Microbiome, Infant Feeding & the First Five Years

02nd September 2024

This year, on Thursday 19 September 2024, The Goodwood Health Summit returns for its second year. An exciting next step in the Summit’s history, it will see the bringing together of leading experts to discuss crucial topics surrounding the microbiome, infant feeding and the importance of nutrition in the first five years.

At a time when we are becoming increasingly aware of the perils of a processed-food diet and the incalculable cost that this has on our health, both physical and mental, and the strain this puts on the NHS, it feels timely to discuss what can be changed from the very start of life.

Held in the breathtaking ballroom of Goodwood House, the Summit’s speakers will focus on the latest research and evidence concerning early years feeding and its impact on long-term health. Broadcaster Justin Webb will be leading the conversation, moderating a distinguished panel of speakers including Dr Chris van Tulleken, Dr Sioned Jones, Mr James Kinross and Professor Louise Kenny. Together, these experts will delve into the complexities of the microbiome and explore how important it is to consider from birth onwards.

Renowned author Gabrielle Palmer, known for her influential work The Politics of Breastfeeding, will also join this year’s Summit, contributing her invaluable insights into the discussions.

Whilst the importance of gut health is increasingly becoming common knowledge amongst adults, infant gut health is not often considered. It is Goodwood Health & Wellbeing’s prerogative to be a convener of these discussions, making this information available to a mass audience in the hope that the more education we have, the healthier and happier the futures of the next generation will be.

Topics that will be debated will include the role of breastfeeding, when this is a viable option, in establishing a healthy microbiome. The speakers will also discuss the ultra-processed foods found in many baby foods, despite the health claims many of these products purport to have; challenges and solutions to enhancing medical and societal understanding of early years nutrition; the role of lifestyle changes, education and awareness in promoting better health outcomes and the influence of commercial and political factors on public health decisions.

The second of a series of Health Summits planned for future years, tackling a multitude of topics which affect us all, this year’s Summit is generously sponsored by Randox Health, who, alongside Goodwood Health & Wellbeing, recognise the urgent need for further research and widespread education on the infant and mother microbiome.

With a line-up of world-class experts and a day filled with insightful discussions, the Goodwood Health Summit is a vital event for healthcare professionals, researchers and anyone interested in the health and wellbeing of future generations. However, it is Goodwood’s firm belief that this information should be accessible to all and so a live link of the Summit will be available to watch during the event and after.
