Video: Travis Pastrana and his 1983 Subaru GL Wagon

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, it’s that you can always rely on Travis Pastrana to bring something outrageous to drive. In 2022 he turned up with his utterly bonkers 1983 Subaru GL Wagon ‘Family Huckster’ and we fell in love with it immediately.

What’s not to like? It’s a stunningly retro shape with a ludicrous 862PS (634kW) boxer engine and the coolest active aero we’ve ever seen. Stick Travis in the driver’s seat and the results are spellbinding every single time. We simply had to catch up with the team behind this extraordinary car to take a closer look at the finer details, which we were over the moon to find out includes a proper ‘80s style tape deck.

If you haven’t yet seen this car in action on the Festival of Speed Hill, we recommend you take a look, because we’re certain you’ll share our enthusiasm. Besides all of the theatrics, the Huckster is also a properly engineered piece of kit, and Travis was confident that he’d have a chance to take victory in the 2022 Timed Shootout. He was eventually beaten by something… a McMurtry Spéirling?

Check out his final run though, because it’s absolutely phenomenal. The car control from Travis is second to none, and perfectly reflects the enthusiasm of the man. Winning isn’t everything, and we honestly love that this car exists. To see it return in 2023 was a huge treat, and we wish it would come back every year.
