2022 Goodwood Revival track timetable revealed

Three days of incredible action and performance, both on and off track, is what you can expect. With an expansion to the Revival’s Revive and Thrive ethos, there really is an amazing number of things to see off track, but for the purposes of GRR we’re going to focus on what you can see on track at this year’s Revival.

There’s a familiar note to the structure of the Goodwood Revival weekend, but with a hint of freshness here and there. We have a pair of races heading into the twilight hours, one on Saturday, one on Sunday, the St. Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul on both Saturday and Sunday and the RAC TT Celebration as the centrepiece for the final day of the weekend.

One of the changes is the return of the Freddie March Memorial Trophy to Friday night for the first time since the 2015 event. The dawn of the excellent Kinrara Trophy (now the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy), and its cementing as the first race of the weekend for the last five Revivals has meant the race for sportscars of the early 1950s has taken a place mostly toward the end of the event. In order to celebrate the 70^th anniversary of the first Goodwood Nine Hours, this year’s Freddie March Memorial Trophy becomes a two-driver, 45-minute race as the light begins to fail – kicking off at 18:25 on Friday.

Before that, the first day of Revival 2022 will largely be filled with practice, as most of the cars set to race over the weekend – from the pre-war Goodwood Trophy Grand Prix cars through to the big GT cars of the RAC TT – all look to set some quick times. The whole weekend will open with a parade of military vehicles, and the traditional dawn patrol of Second World War aircraft.

Saturday’s action kicks off with over 100 Austin 7s flooding the track, before our first chance to see the stunning sportscars of the Sussex Trophy on track comes at 9:25. Racing action begins in earnest at 10:10 as the Madgwick Cup returns and from then the competitive action is all racing – apart from second practice for the RAC TT Celebration GTs. Highlights of the day will absolutely be the St. Mary’s Trophy part one, a race filled with motorsport legends, at 15:05, the mighty Whitsun Trophy, with its mix of Can-Am cars and GT40s at 16:40 and the Glover Trophy for ‘60s F1 cars at 12:35. All that comes before probably the most expensive and definitely the most beautiful race in the world – the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy – ends our day with the sun nudging the skyline. That final race kicks off at 17:25.

In addition to the spectacular display of Austin 7s, our other two parades, the cars of Graham Hill and what looks set to be an extraordinary celebration of Ferrari, will take place on all three days of the festival. Another highlight of every Revival, the Settrington Cup, will celebrate its 10^th anniversary on both Saturday and Sunday, with a battle for youngsters in Austin J40s that you will not want to miss.

Sunday, the final day – which always appears much sooner than you expect – will again kick off with our Austin 7s, before the Chichester Cup’s Formula Junior cars and the Richmond and Gordon Trophies’ ‘50s F1 cars, get racing going at 9:40 and 10:30 respectively. The second part of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy will see two-wheeled machines in battle at 12:15 and we will celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 75^th Jubilee at 14:05.

Sunday’s biggest moment has to be the instant that the Union flag drops at 14:30 to send the cars of the RAC TT on their way. This hour-long, two-driver battle is never to be missed and has become perhaps the most hardly-fought race in the historic motorsport world.

But, don’t be mistaken for thinking that everything goes out with a whimper once the octane of the TT settles. The final three races of the weekend could be the most exciting of the entire weekend: the first all-MGB race we’ve ever held, for the Lavant Cup, follows the TT at 15:55, then the always incredible Sussex Trophy follows at 16:.45 before we finish with the hectic battle for the St. Mary’s Trophy part 2 at 17:35.
