The best thing about making videos like this about the Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport is that we’re never short for choice on what to include. Near enough the entire weekend is epitomised by the constant flow of wheel-to-wheel racing, whether it’s pre-war grand prix cars jostling for position or present-day BTCC heroes giving it everything in Group 1 touring cars, you can guarantee there’ll be someone sending it around the outside of Woodcote, or Madgwick, or St. Mary’s.
And we start this video with exactly that, as Jake Hill makes his way back through the field after suffering a car issue during the Gordon Spice Trophy, carving his way around the outside of the entry into St. Mary’s and so nearly losing it all as the track narrows for the left-hander.
Perhaps the biggest overtaking opportunity at Goodwood is Woodcote Corner, the Motor Circuit’s biggest breaking point after the long Lavant Straight, and you can always guarantee that someone will go for a brazen overtaking move around the outside, we got that and more in the Trofeo Nuvolari as Richard Bradley engaged in an epic duel with Gareth Burnett. The two drivers went side-by-side through Woodcote and then again through Madgwick as Bradley twice sent it around the outside in his Aston Martin Speed Model.
It's not all around the outside, though, as we witnessed a stunning switchback overtake in the Gurney Cup as Olivier Galant sent his Ford GT40 up the inside of Katsuaki Kubota’s Lotus-Ford 30. Galant caught everyone by surprise, including Kubota, who did incredibly well to avoid an incident as the two jockeyed through Woodcote.
For all of the action under braking, however, there is perhaps no higher form of bravery than going for an overtake at the fearsome Fordwater, the fastest corner on the Motor Circuit. It’s rare that someone has the confidence to keep it pinned through there, but that’s exactly what James Cottingham did in his AC Cobra as he ducked underneath Alex Buncombe's E-type in the Moss Trophy.
Stunning moves, the lot of them, and we can’t wait to see more of the same in just a few days’ time at the 81st Members’ Meeting.
