In March 2021 the motoring world lost a legend: Murray Walker. Whether he was interviewing F1 royalty or launching the very first Goodwood Revival, he did everything with an unmatched level of passion. It is fairly obvious, then, that a review of the McLaren F1 from Murray himself is very much worth a few minutes of your time.
This glorious little film was the first of a new segment called ‘the greatest car ever’, created for the second series of ‘modern’ Top Gear – the first series where Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond were joined by James May. Each week a different guest presenter would put forward why a certain vehicle was best, with cars ranging from the London Taxi and the original Land Rover to the Jaguar E-type and this, the McLaren F1.
This might have been aired on 11th May 2003, but everything Murray says still hits home. And, as usual, his excitement is infectious. You can’t help but smile as he says to himself “that was a nice gear change, Murray – I’m quite pleased with that one”. What a clip, and what a man.
