What motorsport is on in March?

01st March 2021
Ben Miles

The European world of motorsport might still be deep in slumber, as the days just begin to creep longer and the daily temperature struggles upward, but in warmer parts of the world the racing calendar is now well underway.

The March motorsport calendar is dominated by racing in America, Australia and the Middle East – three areas that can sustain motorsport most of the year round. NASCAR, as it always will, takes up the bulk of the month, racing every weekend, and we’ve taken the decision to only include the top-level Cup Series here, or the whole thing would start looking quite messy.

Formula E got underway over the weekend, but will not return in March, with the next round not slated to take place until the series visits Rome in April. But fear not if you love single-seater racing, because Formula 1 is back this month. The season was due to kick off in Australia in mid-March, but will now wait until the 28th to kick off its season in Bahrain.  With F1 comes... F2, with the support season also kicking off its championship on the same weekend. There will be three F2 races per weekend now, so plenty to get your teeth into. If you want to know more about the rest of the F1 season and who is driving you can click here, and if you want to know who to look out for in the F2 field in 2021 click here. The second supporting F3 championship doesn’t kick off until May.

If bikes are more your thing, then MotoGP is back on the same day as F1 in the same region – whoever thought up that scheduling nightmare must have been having an off day – as the season kicks off in Qatar. MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 will all race on the Losail circuit, just north of Doha.

For sportscar fans IMSA’s early-season double-header of major international events continues. After Daytona kicked the season off in spectacular fashion, the Cadillac vs. Acura vs. Mazda battle moves to Sebring, for the 12 Hours. This, for us, is one you really don’t want to miss, so just remember that Sebring runs on a Saturday, so you don’t forget.

There’s also Australian Supercars, which fills the weekend that would have been taken up by a series of support races for the Australian Grand Prix, with a weekend at Sandown. The actual format of the weekend is still a bit TBC, so keep an eye out for any details that come up.
