We love an onboard, we love a replay, but there’s something very special about raw trackside footage. Today, that’s exactly what we’ve got: glorious spectator-shot footage of F3000 cars storming around Brands Hatch in 1988.
No, the noise isn’t quite as spectacular as it was for V10 F1 cars testing at Silverstone in 2005, but the 3.0-litre Cosworth and Judd V8s aren’t too bad at all. The driver line-up is decent, too, F3000 being the final step before F1 at the time, with the likes of Johnny Herbert, Roberto Moreno and Jean Alesi on the grid.
Then there’s the speed – these F3000 cars were ridiculously fast. The last F1 race at Brands Hatch was in 1986, with Nelson Piquet taking pole in his Williams FW11 with a 1-minute 6-second best in qualifying, while the slowest car to qualify managed a 1-minute 18-second lap. Johnny Herbert’s pole lap for F3000 in ’88 was 1 minute and 14 seconds. Imagine an F2 from this year outpacing an 2019 F1 car?
