When it comes to track days there’s a good bit of debate around what’s the best tool for the job. Do you buy a purpose-built sportscar or supercar? Do you buy cheap and cheerful and build an apex eater from the ground up? Here today we have an argument for something somewhere in between: in this case, a C5 Corvette Z06.
The Z06 is as it comes - a very capable and affordable sportscar; lightweight, with a strong small block V8 engine. But it’s also a platform that’s begging to be upgraded.
So yes, this car has had an LS7 7.0-litre V8 plopped in the engine bay, plenty of engine enhancements to boot, and chassis modifications give it a surer footing through the corners. No, it’s not got any aero enhancements but, given how comprehensively this one’s been modified, they could honestly be the next step.
In today's clip we find ourselves on board at Circuit of the Americas. As the driver lets it loose out of the pits, we get a feel immediately for how hopped up this engine is. The LS7 starts life with over 500PS (368kW) and this one sounds like it’d have trouble idling at traffic lights with the kind of mental cam that’s in it. So we’re guessing over 600PS (441kW) all in. Especially as in the description, the owner says ‘the 675LTs said I was out accelerating them’. Good Christ…
So, sit back and enjoy as this absolute weapon of a Corvette Z06 gets thrown around COTA. The sound of a cammed small block alone on full song is enough to excite, never mind the sight of this thing dancing on the limit. What a car!
