There’s something ferociously harsh about Porsche’s racing flat-six engines. Regulation changes in various series around the world have seen some of the fastest race-ready 911s get quieter over the last couple of years, but there are still cars around that will entirely write off an ear drum if you’re standing trackside and one flies by. The 991.2 GT3 R is such a machine.
There are few 911s that will ever come close to the ‘Pink Pig’ RSR that raced at Le Mans in 2018 and then came to the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard a few weeks later. But this GT3 R isn’t far off, as the team running the car had removed the muffler from the exhaust system, extracting maximum noise from the 4.0-litre flat-six engine. Why? The better question to ask here is why not?
