Classic Range Rover Safari gets Lunaz EV treatment

Lunaz, the Silverstone-based company that brought us the electrified Aston Martin DB6 and S2 Bentley Continental, has revealed its latest creation, an electric, roofless, short wheelbase Classic Range Rover Safari. It's the same model that starred in the James Bond film Octopussy and served as a shooting platform on many a Royal safari.

Lunaz has gone to town on the classic Rangy. Power comes from dual electric motors producing 380PS (279kW) combined – more than double the power of the original V8. Reassuringly, Lunaz says it has substantially reinforced the body and chassis, fitted modern springs and dampers, and – most reassuringly – slapped on six-pot front and four-pot rear brakes with regen. Lunaz doesn't quote a range but its 90kWh battery should be good for around 250 miles.

The Range Rover's substantial off-road capabilities remain intact despite the EV power with the same approach, breakover and departure angles, and 500mm wading depth as the original.

Despite the changes made underneath, the Lunaz Range Rover is almost identical to the original on the outside. However, this particular model has a unique Maya Blue finish with a dark blue mohair roof.

You'll spot bigger changes inside in the form of a 3D-printed centre console that would look happy in one of Land Rover's current models.

It features modern kit like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports, a reversing camera and digital controls for the air-conditioning and ventilation system. The console took two years to design and is finished in beautiful Mokka Walnut wood with weatherproof satin lacquer. Understandably, the new console will feature in all of Lunaz's classic Range Rover conversions in the future.

More luxury comes in the form of heated front seats finished in soft leather, and the interior features waterproof, chlorine-resistant knitted textiles inspired, we're told, by the materials used for shooting jackets. The interior alone took 1,000 man-hours to complete.

A private commission, the Range Rover Safari shows you exactly what is possible if you scoop up one of the company's 50 remaining Range Rover Classic build slots. And the price? If you have to ask, it's too much.
