Fast electric VWs will be badged GTX

How are you with your fast Volkswagen model lines these days? GTI, obviously. R, yup, we like those. GTD – a fun one if you simply have to burn oil. GTE – it’s electric, right? A bit. It’s a sporty-ish hybrid. Now, a new badge joins the party. Meet GTX, Volkswagen’s badge for sporty EVs, that will first debut on a top-level ID.4 to come.

“The letters GT have long stood for driving pleasure,” says Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Marketing and Sales at the Volkswagen brand. “Now the X is building the bridge to the mobility of the future. Sustainability and sportiness are not mutually exclusive but complement each other intelligently.”

So what marks out a GTX? Well, per the X in the name it brings power to the front wheels. The motor will kick in “within a few milliseconds when very high performance or strong reaction are required”. There’s also a ‘Traction’ driving mode that has both motors on for permanent all-wheel-drive.

On the outside, a GTX will be denoted, beyond the badging, with its own light signature. Beyond all this, little else is known about what’s to come for GTX. We’ll have to wait and see when the ID.4 GTX is revealed in due course. Do we see an ID.3 GTX coming in the future to scupper Golf R sales? Never say never.
