Renault will revive the Twingo as a small electric car with a price tag of under £20,000 – or lease for less than £100 per month – when it goes on sale in 2026.
The Twingo will step onto the lowest rung of a pure-electric line-up that will include the soon-to-be-revealed Renault 4 and Renault 5.
It will rival city cars like the Dacia Spring and Smart EQ ForTwo. However, you can expect it to be a more attractive option than its rivals. Its cheeky looks will elevate it above the more bargain-basement feel of the Dacia, while its back seats are sure to appeal to anyone considering the two-seater Smart car.
Renault’s targeting efficiency of 10kWh/100km, which will allow the new Twingo to be light on electricity. Its small body and simple design make it easier to make and dispose of – meaning it'll produce around 75 per cent less CO2 over its life than your average ICE car.
Like the three Twingos that precede it, you can expect the new model to twang your heartstrings with cute looks and a simple design that’ll keep costs low. As a car that doesn’t have to do much more than keep pace with city traffic, don’t expect the Twingo to be swift. The Dacia Spring gets by with a top speed of just 78mph and a maximum range of 140 miles, and the Twingo will likely exhibit a similar performance.
Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo, says the Twingo will take inspiration from Japan’s tax-friendly Kei cars, which squeeze a surprising amount of interior space out of a tiny footprint. As a result, you can expect the Twingo to be a surprisingly roomy five-door. The neat packaging of an electric motor and battery should make this easier than in an ICE equivalent.
You can expect Renault to flesh out more info on the new Twingo as its launch approaches in 2026.
