Trofeo is to Maserati what AMG is to Mercedes or RS to Audi, signalling the performance-focused variant of a particular model range. Slightly surprisingly the first model to get the Trofeo treatment was the Levante SUV, making it a 190mph monster.
Now however the rest of the trident-badged line-up are getting their own Trofeo models, which means two 200mph stylish Italian saloons to choose from for the family driver in a hurry.
Both are powered by the same Maranello-made twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 making 590PS (433kW) and 730Nm (538lb ft). This is the first time a V8 has been installed under the bonnet of the smaller Ghibli saloon and it makes good use of it, sprinting to 62mph in 4.1 seconds. Its big brother the Quattroporte adds a couple of tenths to that time. The big Levante actually beats them both, all-wheel traction allowing it to tackle the benchmark acceleration test in 3.9 seconds. But, while the SUV is limited to a 190mph top speed, both the Ghibili and Quattroporte Trofeo models are allowed to run on to 203mph.
These two cars now also gain the Integrated Vehicle Control system first seen on the Levante giving the driver the opportunity to dial in different performance modes as well as access launch control. Trofeo cars will be distinguished by the red accents applied to the side air vents, the lightning bolt element of the Maserati trident and of course smatterings of carbon fibre. They also gain a boomerang styling element in the rear lights, harking back to the Maserati 3200GT, the model that resurrected Maserati in many markets.
The models also gain from a slew of interior and technology upgrades and are launched in a very patriotic trio of red, white and green.
