We’ve always maintained the Corvette doesn’t get the credit it deserves in this country as a proper rival to sportscars and sometimes supercars. The latter is especially often the case with the high-spec Z06 and ZR1 versions. Today we have a evidence of that, with a wondrous onboard in a C7 Z06, showing a battle with a McLaren at Barber Motorsports park.
The telemetry view is pretty cool too and very useful. It’s GM’s performance data recorder, which has been an option on a number of its fast cars for the last decade or so. We can see revs, steering, G forces, the track map, speed and times. But none of that tells us what the Camera does, which is that drivers depending, a Corvette can keep a McLaren honest on track. Granted, the Z06 has power on its side – 650PS (478kW) from its 6.2-litre supercharged LT4 engine – but what is otherwise a far less sophisticated car than the carbon-fibre-bodied McLaren, really punches above its weight. Why it’s taken GM so long to bring them over here in RHD is beyond us.
