For our second race at SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard we jump forward from the S.F. Edge Trophy by a couple of decades. That still only takes us to the 1930s and the Goodwood Trophy.
This race features an arsenal of high-powered pre-war Grand Prix machinery from 20 years before the upper echelon of single-seater racing would be consolidated into Formula 1. So while Ferrari is nowhere to be seen in this spectacular grid, the likes of Bugatti, Maserati, Bentley and Alfa Romeo are at this point, seasoned veterans. Then, of course, there are the iconic ERAs, joining MGs, Parnells, Talbot-Lagos, Rileys and more. While they haven’t got the sophistication of post-war machinery, that low, long, more elegant form is beginning to take shape in these ‘30s voiturettes.
You might wonder if it’s the names you know that were due to come out on top. You’d be wrong. Two ERAs – B-Type R11B and A-Type R3A – convincingly dominated, with their fastest laps sitting a full second ahead of the third-placed Riley. The Bugatti Type 73C put in a good shift for a more recognisable marque, coming in the top five but Maserati and Alfa Romeo don’t appear until eighth and ninth position. Watch the entire race in full, as these spectacular cars battle it out like it’s 1935.
