A recent addition to Goodwood’s race roster at the Members’ Meetings also happens to be one of the maddest races we put on. It was an essential inclusion at SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard. It is, of course, the S.F. Edge Trophy. The sight of these steampunk savages slithering around the circuit is so compelling, we had to make SpeedWeek’s S.F. Edge a two-parter for the first time.
The craziness of the Edwardian aero-engined Leviathans is addictive, as they clatter around Goodwood with their positive-cambered wheels as tall as a modern car, flame-spitting exhausts and exposed valvetrains. The drivers hanging from the cabins like they’re in a motorcycle sidecar, wrangling with the giant steering wheel, hacking at external shifters, all while their clattering engines try to vibrate them out of the cabin.
Watch the full race to see which one of these 100-year-old monsters prevails. These might be the bravest drivers to race at Goodwood, even though they’re probably travelling the slowest.
